#36 Madagaskar

  Story At the  Central Park Zoo , Marty the  zebra  celebrates his tenth birthday but has grown bored with his daily routine and longs to experience the wild. Marty's best friend is Alex the  lion , who enjoys showing off for the public and his celebrity status as "the king of New York". Alex attempts to cheer Marty up, but Marty, still unsatisfied, learns that the zoo's  penguins —Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, and Private—are trying to escape, and follows them out. Alex, Melman the  giraffe , and Gloria the  hippopotamus  pursue Marty and attempt to convince him to return. The four, along with the penguins and two  chimpanzees  named Mason and Phil, converge at  Grand Central Station  where the authorities sedate them using  tranquilizer guns . #30 Kubo and the Two Strings

  Story In  feudal Japan , 12-year-old eyepatched Kubo tends to his ill mother Sariatu in a mountain cave near a village. He earns their living by magically manipulating  origami  with music from his  shamisen  for the village folk, telling the tale of his missing father Hanzo, a  samurai  warrior. Kubo is never able to finish his story, as he does not know what happened to Hanzo and Sariatu cannot recall the end due to her deteriorating mental state. Sariatu warns him not to stay out after dark as her Sisters, Karasu and Washi, and his grandfather, the Moon King (who took his eye when he was a baby) will find him and take his remaining eye. One day, Kubo learns of the village's  Bon festival  allowing them to speak to deceased loved ones. Kubo attends but is angry that Hanzo does not appear from his lantern, and forgets to return home before sunset. #27 Croods : A NEW AGE

  Story Years ago, Guy's parents become trapped in tar. As they sink into it, they tell him to find somewhere called "tomorrow". He goes on a long journey and meets a young Belt before eventually coming across Eep, leading to the events of  the first film . The Croods, along with Guy and their pets Chunky and Douglas, are still searching for a place to settle down, all the while Grug acts annoyed at Eep and Guy's blossoming romance. One night, Grug comes across a giant wall and leads the whole pack to it. They are soon caught in a net and are released by the owners of the land, a couple named Phil and Hope Betterman and they are soon revealed to be friends of Guy's late parents and therefore, know Guy. The Bettermans welcome the Croods to their giant tree-home as house guests, where they meet their daughter and Guy's old friend Dawn who immediately befriends Eep. Life with the Bettermans becomes degrading for Grug due to the Bettermans being better evolved. Si...

#26 Croods

  Story A  cave family  called the Croods survives several  natural disasters , due to stubborn patriarch Grug refusing to let anyone leave the cave except for short periods to gather food. Eep, his teenage daughter, loves her family but frequently rebels against these strictures. One night, Eep sneaks out when she sees a light, and encounters an inventive  modern human  boy named Guy and his  pet   sloth  Belt, who have made a  torch . He warns her of an impending apocalypse and offers to help her escape, but Eep elects to stay with the family. Guy leaves her a shell horn to blow if she needs help, but when Eep returns to her frantic family, they destroy the horn out of fear of the "New". A massive earthquake destroys the cave and surrounding lands, and the Croods flee into a jungle they discover below their home mountains. Encountering a "Macawnivore", a brightly colored feline whom Eep's grandmother dubs "Chunky", the family flees him...

#9 Memory of Geisha

  Story Memoirs of a Geisha  is a  historical fiction  novel by American author  Arthur Golden , published in 1997. The novel, told in  first person perspective , tells the story of a fictional  geisha  working in  Kyoto ,  Japan , before, during and after  World War II , and ends with her being relocated to  New York City . In 1929, 9-year old Chiyo Sakamoto and her 15-year-old sister, Satsu, are sold by their father to work within the entertainment districts of Kyoto. They are taken from their home, the coastal fishing village of Yoroido along the  Sea of Japan , and travel to Kyoto by train; upon arrival, Chiyo is taken to the Nitta  Okiya  (geisha boarding house) in  Gion , whereas Satsu - deemed less attractive and therefore a poor investment - is instead taken to a brothel within Kyoto's pleasure district.
